What’s better than Patron?

Patron gets kudos for raising the profile of tequila in the United States and abroad. However, due to the brand’s enormous marketing efforts many people believe that Patron is the best tequila you can buy, when in fact there are scores of better – and cheaper — tequilas available (in our opinion.)

We love tequila, but we don’t drink Patron. It’s not even stocked in our bar at home. We don’t like it because it has a very watery taste in your mouth and has a bite of alcohol in the back. We don’t find this a pleasant drinking experience.

Patron is made for Americans, and until very recently has been export-only, meaning it isn’t available for sale in Mexico. The taste is watered-down because they figured that Americans would rather buy something less flavorful than a full bodied tequila. We disagree with that choice.

We recently brought up this topic with Mark Alberto Holt, owner of the SFT Tequila Bar in Sayulita, Mexico and it sparked this rather amusing video.

If you’re a Patron lover, that’s fine. We embrace all tequila drinkers and their preferences. All we want to do is open your mind up to some other excellent tequilas.

We thank Mark for making that point very clear!

I love it: “I have 300 tequilas that are better than Patron. Let’s talk about what’s better than Patron: *Everything* is better than Patron.” I think he made his point nicely!

[...] a rich drunk. There is a huge price distinction between those two levels of lifestyle. Whatever. TasteTequila shot this awesome vid of Mark going off on the topic here – check it out [...]

After recently starting my own company representing my friend’s tequila, the ‘Patron myth’ is something I encounter on almost a daily basis. Thanks for this article… I will definitely be adding this to my arsenal to combat this HUGE misconception shared by a majority of the general public!

[...] To Kenneth: We have to give it to you straight. You could have UPGRADED your tequila to cheaper brand. Confused? Watch this video. [...]

I agree, There are many Tequila’s better then Patron. Ours for one is better. Our Rattle Snake Tequila beat Patron at the IWSC in London. The IWSC is the most prestigious Wine and Spirits contest in the world as a Double Blind taste test is the technique used. Yes, we beat Patron…

Hi Eddie. That’s awesome. Honestly, we don’t like Patron. It’s inconsistent in quality and flavor and varies from bottle-to-bottle. That’s what happens when you have a huge marketing machine in the United States creating more demand for a product than actually exists. They need to keep up with the demand *somewhere* and *anywhere* they can, so if that means getting tequila from multiple places, and slapping a “Patron” label on it — so be it. The Americans won’t know the difference. This could never happen with something like Coca-Cola, something that folks in the USA actually KNOW about. :-) Congrats on beating Patron.

there is lots out there better than Patron. Someone gave it to me for a gift and haven’t even open the box. Chinaco, Corazon, even Milagro for $20 is better.

Wow! nothing is better than Patron. Certainly my all time favorite. Milagro is really good and I would put in my top 3 along with a Don Cuco Sotol that I had but I think it is a mezcal and not a tequila. It is popular here in Santa Fe.

There is no question – Patron is the BEST marketed tequila. Nobody spends more money, which is why they’re able to sell a whole lot of a mediocre product.
