We aren’t in Mexico right now. We’re not in California or New York either. We’re in Macon, Mississippi – and we have come to the realization that we are spoiled tequila brats. We are here to attend a family function (Scarlet’s family lives here) and today during our errands we went looking for ingredients to make a Pure Margarita.
This is an easy task in Mexico or California, but a little more effort (and money) is required if you want to pull it off in Macon, Mississippi.
The first, and most important ingredient, tequila, required a 30 minute drive to the “package store” – one of maybe two places you can get liquor here since until recently it was a dry county. Once we arrived, we realized that choice was not only limited, but scary. We never heard of “Two Fingers” tequila. “Aristocrat Silver” and “Pepe Lopez” didn’t ring any bells either, and considering they are all in the $14 price range, and none of them have “100% de Agave” listed on the label, we avoided them.
We spent a little more ($26) and opted for a bottle of 1800 Reposado, a 100% agave tequila made by Jose Cuervo.
Next ingredient – limes. We picked them up at Super Wal-Mart, in Louisville, Mississippi – which is a 30 minute drive from the “package store.” Limes were selling for 48 cents each. (Limes can be found on sale – 18/$1. – in San Francisco. Sure, the rent is higher, but the limes are crazy cheap.)
Super Wal-Mart also sells agave nectar. But not near the honey or sweeteners. We found it hiding over with the baking items.
So tonight, we plan to introduce the Pure Margarita to the nice folks of Macon. Maybe it will start a tequila revolution, and the “package store” will upgrade their selection of 100% de Agave tequilas in time for our next visit.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.
I have an old black bottle of two fingers, any value? Won’t drink because of the bottle.
I got arrested in 1980 after drinking a bottle of Black bottled Two Finger Tequila. I no longer drink hard liquor — and never Two Finger Tequila! <
Trust me, here in Nashville things are a much better, and we are considered the “buckle” of the Bible Belt.
Fuck the bible belt!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aristocrat is brutal stuff? Not sure what it’s made out of but it’s the opposite of good, smooth, 100% Agave tequila? Rubbing alcohol anyone?
I remember seeing Two Fingers advertised in magazines throughout the 80’s – Heavy Metal, National Lampoon, Rolling Stone etc. Then the brand seemingly disappeared.
I cut my teeth on 2 Fingers and Pepe Lopez and at 16, didn’t know any better. But at 16, we couldn’t exactly afford $8 a shot, $8 a bottle did the job. Besides, how can you appreciate good tequilla if you haven’t experienced the other extreme?
We are also very disappointed in Ohio and West Virginia. Having lived the majority of my life in Texas, I just assumed that “good” tequila was just a staple of every restaurant and bar establishment. How very wrong I am. While we were in a local bar last night I asked if they had patron – no. Jose? No. 1800? No. Ok, I’ll bite now – what DO you have? Some disgusting excuse for tequila called Two Fingers. She looked at me like I was crazy when I asked her to dress it. Not an actual lime OR lemon in the place either! So this woman gets 2 more shot glasses and pours shot level amounts of “lime juice” from a bottle. It’s also worth mentioning that they’ve never heard of fireball either… this is seriously making me reconsider this move.
I like two fingers. Twisted right now.
I’ve been looking for Two Fingers. Tequila snobbery is definitely on this post. Everybodies taste buds are different. Cabo is my fav followed by either Hornitos or Two Fingers.
We’ve drank a lot of Two Fingers Tequila in my house and it wasn’t until very recently that I was gifted a bottle of Patron that I was provided the opportunity to try them side-by-side and learn the difference. I lined up shots of 2 Fingers, Patron and 1800. It was a lesson I’ll never forget. I also realize that El Jimador is some pretty good too.
I’ll continue to have 2 Fingers on my bar for mixing when it won’t make a difference to who may be drinking it, but I’ll also hold back a bottle of 1800 for those with discriminating tastes that want the real 100% pure agave.
Booze snobbery is the bastion of provincial minds.
I first drank two fingers in 1977 in Florida, Back then I didn’t realize just how good it was, it was just for a buzz. Over the years since then I’ve tried just about every Tequila sold in the states and a good percentage of Mexico’s offering. I’m now retired and living on a fixed income and I can honestly say that Two Fingers is the best cheap Tequila on the market. All of the other Tequila products under $20 for 750ml taste harsh and make you feel like your drinking rubbing alcohol. I always have a bottle of Two Fingers Silver in my freezer. Great ice cold and chased by a cold beer!
Got award winning lunazul here in NC@$20, was on sale for $17 all of December
Two Finger is good stuff! I love Espolon, Corralejo and Herradura but when it comes to making a margarita and a lot of them you just can’t beat Two Finger. Straight up itbtastes much better than any Jose. Anyone that doesn’t buy it because of the price we’ll I can remember when they were given away Four Roses Bourbon and now price it.
Completely agree.
Two fingers tequila was also my favorite in the 1980s in Orlando, Florida and it was priced similarly to other stuff like Pepe lopez and Jose Cuervo. I remember the bottles being black and they had silver and the more expensive gold type. The hangovers were not too bad, at least not as bad as the Albertson’s brand tequilla which sold for about $8 for a 1.75 L jug, lol.
Recently discovered Two Fingers after moving to NC from RI. Surprise, it’s very good. Straight Tequila, usually on ice, is just about all I drink. This is a good tequila. Nice taste, nothing sweet or syrapy about it.
I had an unopened Black Bottle of Two Fingers back from my guess 1997 . Unless I had it from even earlier. I never was a big Tequilla guy, Even though I had a custom built bar , loaded with top end Scotches , single and blended and everything else. I guess over a period of time we used it for a mixer . I do have a stock pile of Mesqual el super cheapo bought everytime I go to Mexico . The guy with the hat and salt. Got to say I love it.
Fades come and go being 66 I can assure you. Snobery too. A lot of times when they do the snob tests with wine , coffee , bourbon these so callex perts end up picking the cheapest brand over the so called high end.
Back in the day Jack Daniels was the bomb of Tennesse whiskeys [ not a borubon ] All the top celeberites demaded it in their dressing rooms. They get it for free a little known fact . Rolling Stones to you name them.
Now the snobs turn their noses at Jack . Here is Michigan they sell Michigan Bourbons at ridiculus prices. I always say why am I paying more for a Michigan Borbon than a Ky one ?
Guess I will display the Two Fingers Black bottle with an old magazine ad .
