People often ask us which tequilas they should pickup in Mexico that they can’t get here in the states. Of course, there are scores of tequilas that never make it across the border but we have a few Mexico-only favorites that we often recommend. And the good news is that at least two of our three favorites are due to come out in the states very soon.
We recently discovered a gem of a tequila called El Tequileño, which is reposado aged for close to one year (11 months and 2 weeks to be exact), giving it a rich, full-bodied flavor. It is extremely affordable considering it is of añejo quality. Given that it’s priced around $25, we crammed our luggage with several bottles the last time we went to Mexico.
Our next pick is Siete Leguas D’Antaño extra añejo. Many consider the Siete Leguas line as the cream of the crop of traditional Mexican tequilas. If you appreciate the clean agave kick of their blanco, you’ve got to taste how the line progresses all the way to the extra añejo.
Both El Tequileno and the D’Antaño are due out in the states soon. We will let you know as soon as they hit the shelves.
Finally, our last pick is Maestro Tequilero tequila añejo classico, a smooth and rich tequila that carries all the oaky flavors that you expect from an aged spirit.
So far, we’ve only seen this in duty free, although we suspect you might be able to get it in other retail outlets in Mexico. But even if you can’t, duty free is a quick and easy way to get your hands on it. (That’s where we got the bottle we’re showing in the video.)
So, if you’re going to Mexico or have a friend who’s going, you may want to send them this list. Otherwise, wait a little while and they just may come to you.

Thoughtful and interesting, thank you. I was brought up in Mexico but moved to England at such a young age I barely remember anything apart from the tasty food and kind people. I finally found some authentic mexican food if you want to have a look, I thought I’d share it with you!
sorry to hear you are in england iv now been in mexico 10 years i will never go back to englan jajajajaj
Maestro Añejo classico has been our favorite for the past 2 years. Our tequila loving masseuse in Tulum introduced it to us. Have found it at the Covi store in Tulum but always pick it up at the Duty Free. Great website!!
I was able to purchase the Maestro Tequilero Anejo in a liquor store in Mexicali. Thanks for all the great reviews.
looking for tequilla called two hats
We haven’t heard of that one yet… if we ever come across it, I will be sure to let you know!
Where in the USA can I find this tequila?
At the time we filmed this video, these tequilas were not available in the USA.
El Tequileño was the house bottle at our all-inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen. That is a killer reposado. I couldn’t find it at any stores.
Never ever buy tequila at duty free in Mexico. It is ALWAYS cheaper in the liquor stores like La Europea.
Centinela reposado, about $18 US, smoooooth. Very nice tequila.
Great picks!! Tres generaciones is a great tequila as well! Salud.
It would be nice to see an updated version of this story. I know that the market has changed a lot since then. I know we have many wonderful tequilas available to us in the US but I’d love to know if there are some excellent ones I need to pick up while I’m down there. Thank you.
You’re right, we should do an updated version. Perhaps create a list of tequila that are currently only available in Mexico? We might be able to do that on the TequilaMatchmaker.com site, that way it will always be updated.
In the meantime, I would be on the lookout for Cascahuín Extra Añejo (http://tequilamatchmaker.com/tequilas/5983-cascahuin-extra-anejo), El Búho Tequila Reposado (http://tequilamatchmaker.com/tequilas/5776-el-buho-tequila-reposado), and Galindo Blanco Organico (http://tequilamatchmaker.com/tequilas/5157-galindo-blanco-organico).
Perfidio tequila
When on the border town in Lajitas, which is on the west side of Big Ben national park, I went to an underground bar just east of the Lajitas on the south side of the highway. Ask the bartender the difference in tequilas, and his opinion of the best, or one of the best. He took down a small dark blue porcelain bottle with a long thin neck and a little cork in the top. It was called Profidio, or Perfidio. There was only one liquor store in A nearby small town they had a few cafés and a couple small liquor stores called Terlingua. Surprisingly sold this brand of tequila, but never seen more than one or two bottles on the shelf at a time, later visits couldn’t find any. Back in the late 90s it was $80 for a small bottle, 500 mls?, but it’s absolutely amazing tequila if you can find it. One thing I did notice is that the opaque porcelain bottles that have long thin necks and a cork in the top, not a screw on cap or anything else, a cork, Usually are the best. Now that was true in the late 90s, I wonder if you can even buy it now. Seth Thomas MD
Left a few comments and one reply but not seeing them listed anywhere. However I looked up the tequila brand I was speaking of and found it and got the correct spelling. I just covered it in a small pub that was underground just east of Lajitas, located west of big Ben’s national park in South Texas on the border, and you can walk to the red grill grand and they will be folks there with boats that will roll you to the other side and guide you to some local villages and safely escort you to places to eat and meet Some town folks. I did this with one of the local Rangers I met at one of the parks museums and we became good friends. Go to the museum just east of town Terlingua and try to get introduced to a Ranger, a young fella with a beard, but all I met were very friendly and of a certain type most amiable and eager to show you around and tell you things. Don’t offer or ask about going over the border as they’re not supposed to do that, but hopefully if they trust you and like you they will make the offer. Otherwise, I would not go that route. Definitely Do not go alone and not with a bunch of people, maybe two or three at the most. You must have one of the Rangers escort you that knows the folks on the USA side of the river waving They roll you over for just a small amount, but again that was in the late 1990s. Just west of Lajitas at the hotel there, really a neat place to go, is a trailer park in on an area just east of there is worthy boats are located. They’re just small little row boats to ferry you across. The river was not too wide or Dave, but it changes depending on the season and rainfall. I bought a little dark blue porcelain bottle with a thin neck and a cork on the top, and it was $90 for a small bottle back in the late 90s, and I’m not seeing that bottle anywhere. And the price is really escalated.. But if you are a true tequila lover, this is one to try.
